Make To Do Lists

Life is busy. We often have a lot on our plate and a lot of things we need to get done each day. Free up your brain so that you are not constantly trying to remember everything you have to do and you can focus your concentration on actually getting stuff done. At the start of each day or before any project take a few minutes and write a to do list. Make a list of everything you have to do. Don’t worry too much if the list gets long or if it appears impossible to complete them all. There are no rules that say you can’t move items to tomorrow’s list.

Once you’ve completed writing your list, review it. If something is most important to accomplish make sure it’s on top. Look for tasks you can combine or eliminate. Break up large tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks.

Psychologically, it helps you to maintain your motivation when you are able to check off tasks that you have completed. When you see items checked off, you’ll feel more productive and less likely to procrastinate. Here’s a tip, always put “Make a to do list” at the top of your to do lists. That way, you can check it off right away.

Hard is Usually Right

"...now I have come to crossroads in my life. I always knew what the right path was. Without exception, I knew. But I never took it. You know why? It was too damn hard..."

-Frank Slade, "Scent of a Woman"

Life is a series of choices. Some are easy. Some are a little more difficult. Some are downright hard. Choices require decisions. Harder choices require tougher decisions.
When faced with a hard choice you usually have an easy decision or a hard decision. When you don't know what to do try to remember that the harder decision is usually the right decision.
Quick and easy solutions, or shortcuts, usually do not solve problems but postpone them, making the next one so much harder to resolve.
When in doubt remember hard is usually right. That's why we don't want to do it. We like easy solutions. When you find yourself faced with one of those hard choices and you know what the right thing to do is but you don't want to do it because it's hard remember to “Suck it up, Buttercup”

"Suck It Up Buttercup & Other Four-Word Life Lessons" is a collection of easy-to-remember slogans for a better life. Each four-word life lesson includes a short narrative to explain the lesson with a mixture of anecdotes, real-world applications, pop culture references, current events, and personal reflections. What started as a last-day of-school lesson for the author's graduating 8th-graders morphed into a year-long project of daily social media posts geared toward imparting some commonsense wisdom to his students to deal with some of the issues they were facing. This book is a collection of 250 of these short, four-word lessons as they were originally written. While some of the current events and references might be a few years old, the lessons are timeless.

Suck It Up Buttercup

Whining and complaining will not get you far in life. So, don't whine and don't complain. Got a job to do and you don't like it? Complaining about it won't make it any easier. Suck it up and get to work. Every minute you waste complaining is a minute you could have spent getting the job done. Don't like a situation that you're in? Whining about it won't help. Suck it up and fix the situation. Can't fix it? Move on or deal with it. Complaining certainly won't make it better.

You have all the power to make your life better. Use it. Don't point fingers and blame others for your problems. Don't feel sorry for yourself. None of these things are productive. If you have the power to make things better, then do it. If not, I promise you that whining and complaining about it will not help at all.

Bottom line, life can be miserable at times. You're going to have to do things you'd rather not do. This is true for everyone. You can quit, give up, and wallow in self-pity but you'll never be successful. You can wait for a fairy godmother to come and wave her magic wand and make all of your troubles go away, but that's not going to happen. Successful people don't look for pity. Successful people don't wait for others to rescue them. They suck it up and do whatever it takes to improve their situation.

Next time things don't go your way, suck it up buttercup.
